Marketing in the Agentic Era

Marketing still begins with a person

Y Academy Press Editors

Each wave of technology has convinced some marketers that the fundamentals had changed. Television, search, social media and now AI agents have each been described as the end of the old rules. Each time, the tools changed dramatically and the foundation did not: a person with a need, a promise that meets it, and the trust that comes from keeping the promise.

What AI changes

A great deal changes, and it should not be understated. Research that took weeks can be done in hours. Content can be produced and adapted for every audience. Agents can manage campaigns, answer customers and adjust prices continuously. For a student entering the field, fluency with these tools is no longer optional.

But the tools make the fundamentals more important, not less. When everyone can produce content at no cost, content stops distinguishing anyone. When every competitor can personalise, personalisation becomes the minimum. What remains scarce is genuine understanding of a customer, a product worth recommending, and a brand people believe.

Hearts and minds

The phrase winning hearts and minds is old, but it names the two things marketing has always had to do. Minds are won with evidence: the product works, the price is fair, the claim is true. Hearts are won with meaning: the brand stands for something, and the customer wants to be associated with it. Machines can help with both, but they cannot supply either. A false claim delivered efficiently is still false, and a brand with nothing to stand for does not gain conviction by being automated.

The foundation for the agentic era is therefore the classic one, studied more seriously: understand people, make honest promises, and keep them.

Marketing Foundations sets out how to win hearts and minds in the age of AI.
