How Publishing Works
A clear path from manuscript to published book — no stage skipped, nothing decided without telling you why.
1. Initial Conversation
We start by understanding your manuscript, not quoting a price. What have you written — trade nonfiction, a textbook, a scholarly thesis, an academic paper? What’s your timeline, and what are you hoping this book does for you? This conversation shapes everything that follows.
2. Manuscript Assessment
Before we recommend anything, we read the manuscript. This is a real assessment, not a formality, we are gauging how much developmental, structural, and copy work it actually needs. A polished draft and a rough first pass are not the same job, and we won’t price them as if they were.
3. Package Recommendation
Based on that assessment, we recommend the tier that matches the work your manuscript needs, not the highest tier by default. If your book only needs a copyedit and formatting, that’s what we’ll propose. Every package is built around three tiers, Essentials, Standard, and Full-Service, each scaled to how much editorial work stands between your draft and a finished book.
4. Written Quote
You’ll receive a written proposal before any work begins: the production fee, the format, the estimated timeline, and, just as importantly, what’s included and what isn’t. Nothing is left to a verbal understanding.
5. Agreement and Deposit
Once you approve the proposal, we move to a formal publication agreement — the document that sets royalty terms, rights, and deposit terms in writing. Editorial work is scheduled only after the signed agreement and deposit are in hand.
6. Production
Your manuscript enters our standard editorial pipeline: developmental review, structural and line editing, copyediting, and a final proofreading pass — each a distinct stage, each completed in full before the next begins. Interior formatting follows the house specification built for your book’s category, and cover design proceeds alongside.
7. Launch
Retail pricing is confirmed against live market comparables at the point of publication, not estimated months earlier. Your formats are published, your author copies are delivered, and your book carries Y Academy Press as its publisher of record — with its own ISBN, issued through Library and Archives Canada.
