The Stewardship argues that incremental fixes — better tools, tighter rules, a return to rigor — are answers to the wrong problem. The challenge is architectural. If knowledge transmission is no longer the institution’s comparative advantage, the institution has to be rebuilt around what it can still do that AI cannot: develop bounded competence, cultivate creative and critical judgment, teach people to direct AI rather than be replaced by it, and form the character on which all of it depends.
